"Selección de 198 Barricas" offers an exclusive product in limited numbers to be sold in specialist wine stores, clubs and professional associations.
González Byass has chosen the International Gastronomy Summit as the most suitable framework for launching its latest great product, a wine from the top range of those made by the Beronia winery.
The name "198 Barricas" symbolises the very essence of the wine – a selection of nothing but the best. "198 Barricas" has been made with extreme care and attention to detail – from selection of the best Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo grapes picked in old-established vineyards, to the barrels used for ageing.
Founded in 1973 by a group of entrepreneur friends, Beronia was purchased by González Byass in 1982. Since then, the focus has been on quality products, enhanced production and ageing processes, renovation and expansion of the cellars and a large investment in research and development.
Beronia is today producing two lines of Rioja wine. One is a classic based on Viura, with a Crianza, a Reserva and a Gran Reserva.. The other is an updated line of monovarietals – a Viura fermented in the barrel, a Tempranillo Especial and a Mazuelo Reserva. Beronia is the only Rioja winery to produce a Reserva wine from Mazuelo grapes.
Selección de 198 Barricas, Reserva 2001
This is a wine made from selected grapes from 60-year-old vineyards, using the Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo varieties grown on the chalky, clay soils of the suppliers closest to Ollauri in Rioja Alta. Only 50,000 bottles have been produced.
Crianza. The ageing process starts out with a period of 24 months in a selection of 198 new barrels combining American oak – for its vanilla and caramel touches – with French oak – for its spiciness. This is followed by a period of 2 years in the bottle to achieve perfect balance.
